Can you make magnets from thick playing cards?
Short answer: yes, playing cards are #buttonable (but some tricks are needed).
I use a normal playing card glossy deck. These sometimes get incomplete or you just have too many and it's definitely better to #upcycle.
As you can see, we only take the highs and aces; because that's just how we are here in our ivory button tower!
First I chose which size of buttons would fit best with a handy transparent area. The transparent area is the front of the buttons. The coloured one goes to the side of the buttons and a bit to the inside. The circle is really the edge on which to cut.
Then, try it...
The first magnet made without glossy Mylar plastic film. After all, the cards are already thick enough and shiny. Result: the paper tears on the edges of the buttons. This happens often with too thick or fragile paper against the sharp button edges. A foil over the cardboard would solve this, but then the whole thing would certainly be too thick (and the work heavy).
The solution is already visible in the photo above. We need thinner material so we carefully remove the laminate layer from the backing.
One layer less and therefore thinner, we try again!
But... Tears again. The paper is too fragile to be used like this.
With this thickness, we can use Mylar foil to prevent tearing and protect the end result:
Great success! Playing cards are #buttonable. Think of all those cool but incomplete vintage cards that you can give a second life this way. Nice!
PS: These are magnets but it also works perfectly with other types like game buttons if you like sharp objects. I am more of a magnet man!
